It appears from information revealed Tuesday by a French prosecutor that the world owes much to the people who subdued a gunman on a Thalys train in France late last week. By jumping him and disarming him, they may have prevented a massacre of enormous proportions.
The prosecutor, Francois Molins, said at a press conference that the suspect, Ayoub El Khazzani, carried with him about 200 rounds of ammunition. His Internet usage, Molins said, showed "clear evidence of terrorist intent."
And his goal? The prosecutor put it in stark terms: El Khazzani, the prosecutor said, was "attempting to kill a whole train full of people."
El Khazzani has been charged with attempted murder, attempted mass murder and membership in a terrorist organization, Molins said.
Molins said El Khazzani has invoked his right to remain silent after days of "evasive answers."
'I'm not going to be the guy who dies sitting down'
Four passengers who thwarted the gunman's plan were awarded the French Legion of Honor on Monday by French President Francois Hollande.
One of them, Briton Chris Norman, told CNN on Tuesday that he preferred to die trying over sitting and waiting for a near-certain death.
"My position was, I'm not going to be the guy who dies sitting down," Chris Norman told CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday. "If you're going to die, try to do something about it."
Norman was among four people, including the three Americans, who overpowered a man armed with a Kalashnikov automatic rifle Friday on a train from Amsterdam to Paris.
American Apparel has "substantial doubt" it will stay in business, the company said Monday.
The clothing brand has been struggling for some time, and news it's nearing collapse came as American Apparel reported a net loss of $19.4 million for last quarter.
"We believe that we may not have sufficient liquidity necessary to sustain operations for the next twelve months," the company said in a press release.
It also announced plans to reorganize its debt and extend an existing line of credit from $50 million to $90 million, though it expects to post losses for the remainder of the year.
That suggests the company is nearing bankruptcy. American Apparel said it's considering some financial alternatives to right itself, including refinancing or restructuring its existing debt, according to the press release.
According to its balance sheet, American Apparel has about $6.8 million in cash on hand.
The Los Angeles-based company said sales were down 17% last quarter due to stores closing and a strong dollar.
"The decline in comparable sales was attributable to the lack of new style introduction for the spring and summer selling season," American Apparel said in a press release.
Investors have largely soured on the brand. It's stock is down more than 86.8% over the past year, including another 8% drop on Tuesday.
American Apparel still hopes to turn things around. It named a new CEO in June and just replaced its global sales manager. It also plans to cut costs by another $30 million over the next 18 months.

Major international hotel chains are increasingly rolling out thousands of new rooms in Africa's business hotspots, keen to expand their footprint on the continent's burgeoning economies.
From Lagos and Kigali to Nairobi and Johannesburg, the world's best known hoteliers are targeting Africa's growing urban centers to benefit from a rising number of business travelers and a huge undersupply in available rooms.
"There's a growing demand in those capital cities because they are the centers of business, of government and of commerce -- all of which have hospitality needs," says Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president of development for Hilton Worldwide, Europe and Africa.
"We have a very bullish feel for these markets and we are very excited about the opportunity Africa presents," he adds. "I think that for the next 20 years we are going to have our hands full with opportunity."
'World woken up to Africa'
Last month, the International Monetary Fund said that sub-Saharan Africa's economy is expected to expand by 5.6% in 2013 and 6.1% next year, outpacing the global average of 3.3% and 4% in accordance.
Andrew McLachlan, Carlson Rezidor Vice President for Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, says it is Africa's potential to offset the sluggishness in more developed markets that's appealing to global players.
"What has really happened is that post the economic crash in 2008/2009, the rest of the world has really woken up to Africa," says McLachlan.
"There's been such good news coming out of Africa from a GDP growth point of view; better telecommunications; improved security; political stability; and improved airlift," he adds. "It's really become a sort of new scramble back into Africa."
Meanwhile, international tourism arrivals in the continent grew by 6% last year to reach a record 52 million, according to data by the World Tourism Organization.
Ten senior executives of the company that owned the warehouse site that exploded in the Chinese city of Tianjin have been detained, state media reported Tuesday, as authorities promised to investigate the cause of the disaster.
Li Liang, the president of Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co, which stores and transports chemicals, was among those being held, as was the company's vice president, Cao Haijun, and Song Qi, the chief financial officer.
They have been under detention since August 13. Earlier reports had said two unnamed executives of the firm were in detention.
Massive explosions rocked the northeastern coastal city late Wednesday, killing at least 114 people, officials said, and devastating a large industrial zone and nearby residences.
At least 57 people are still missing, according to authorities.
Thousands of officials, firefighters, policemen and local residents mourned the victims at the blast site Tuesday, bowing their heads and observing a moment of silence to pay their respects.
Questions over license
Official news agency Xinhua said the company was licensed to handle dangerous chemicals at the time of the blasts but only obtained that license in June. A previous license had lapsed in October 2014.
The warehouse was a temporary storage facility that housed materials after they arrived at the port and before they were transported elsewhere, city officials have said.

The day after Monday's rush-hour atrocity left 22 dead at a shrine popular with tourists in central Bangkok, authorities have not determined who was behind the attack.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the bombing at the Erawan Shrine, while police are refusing to rule anything or anyone out. National Police Chief Somyot Pumpanmuang said on state-run TV that authorities had been warned about possible attacks, but they didn't know where or when they might occur.
While the capital has never before witnessed such a devastatingly brutal attack, Thailand's recent history has been turbulent to say the least, with the country currently governed by a military junta following last year's coup.
Muslim Insurgency
Thai security forces have been waging a decades-long campaign against a Muslim insurgency in the south of the country that has claimed thousands of lives. Well-armed, motivated and increasingly audacious, insurgents in the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun and Songkhla -- once part of an independent Malay Muslim sultanate until they were annexed by Thailand, then called Siam, in 1909 -- have emerged with a clear goal: the creation of a separate Muslim state for the region's 1.8 million Muslim ethnic Malays.
While calls for secession have simmered since then, an insurgent raid to steal weapons from an army camp in January 2004, led to a crackdown by the Thai military, which sparked the modern insurgency.
The Thai government has sent more than 150,000 soldiers to the region to protect it from an estimated 3,000 to 9,000 rebel fighters -- or juwae, as they are called locally -- according to estimates from human rights groups. But the conflict has never spread out of the southern provinces.
The Nigerian journalist known to have access to top commanders of the Boko Haram sect, Ahmad Salkida, has debunked
claims by the Chadian President, Idris Derby, that the dreaded Boko
Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has been dethroned and replaced with a
certain Mahamat Daoud.
Salkida insisted that Abubakar Shekau is alive and still presides over the affairs of the notorious group.
Recall
that at a press conference to mark Chad’s 55th independence
anniversary, Derby had said: “There is someone apparently called Mahamat
Daoud who is said to have replaced Abubakar Shekau and wants to
negotiate with the Nigerian government.”
But Salkida noted that the Chadian leader was lying, stressing that the same was how he misled former president, Goodluck Jonathan into entering a botched peace deal with the sect.
An Indonesian aircraft carrying 54 people lost contact with air traffic
control on Sunday in the remote, forested eastern Papua region, the
National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) said, with search efforts
hampered by failing light as night falls.
"We can't confirm it
has crashed. We can say contact has been lost with the plane," BASARNAS
chief Bambang Soelystyo told Reuters by phone.
"It's a Trigana airline plane carrying 54 people including 5 crew. We are working to get more details."
According
to the official BASARNAS Twitter account, the aircraft, a short-haul
ATR 42-300 airliner belonging to Trigana Air Service and built in France
and Italy, was carrying 44 adult passengers, five crew and five
children and infants.
The plane was flying between Jayapura's Sentani Airport and Oksibil, due south of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province.
The agency's Jayapura office was coordinating the search, a separate tweet read as dusk set in the tropics.
Air transport is commonly used in Papua, Indonesia's easternmost province, where land travel is often impossible.
It
was not immediately clear if search efforts would continue into the
night in the densely forested mountainous region where the aircraft was
traveling.
According to the Aviation Safety Network, an online
database, the ATR 42-300 had its first flight 27 years ago. ATR is a
joint venture between Airbus and Alenia Aermacchi, a subsidiary of
Italian aerospace firm Finmeccanica .
Trigana has been on the EU
blacklist of banned carriers since 2007. Airlines on the list are barred
from operating in European airspace due to either concerns about its
safety standards, or concerns about the regulatory environment in its
country of registration.
The airline has a fleet of 14 aircraft,
according to the airfleets.com database. These include 10 ATR aircraft
and four Boeing 737 classics. These have an average age of 26.6 years,
according to the database.
Trigana has had 14 serious incidents
since it began operations in 1991, according to the Aviation Safety
Network’s online database. Excluding this latest incident, it has
written off 10 aircraft.
Indonesia has a patchy aviation safety
record and has seen two major plane crashes in the past year, including
an AirAsia flight that went down in the Java Sea, killing all on board.
That crash prompted the government to introduce regulations aimed at improving safety.
Indonesia's
president promised a review of the aging air force fleet in July after a
military transport plane crashed in the north of the country, killing
more than 100 people
In an exclusive interview with morhs magazine, Five Star Music act Harrysong aka Mr. Reggae Blues spoke about his friendship with label mate, KCee.
Harrysong described his meeting and subsequent friendship with KCee as a blessing.
He said: “KCee is a friend, colleague, elder brother and a
blessing to me. We met when I was performing at O Jez nite club. He
encouraged me and sprayed money (on me). We later got talking. He told
me how good I was. We became friends and the rest is history.”
Harrysong also commented on the rumours that he writes songs for the Limpopo singer. “For KCee, it is different,” he said. “Fine, I
am a writer, I write for everybody, but in Five Star, we work as a team.
Sometimes, even E Money will come in during the session. He will listen
and make suggestions. We will all come together share ideas and come up
with something meaningful.”
He described a writing process at the label: “When KCee writes a
chorus and I write the verse, I can’t say it is written by me. When Soso
brings the idea of the melody, I put words into it, I can’t say that
this song is written by me. The Five Star team as a whole works
together.”
When asked If he would have made Limpopo a bigger hit, if he had sang it, he said: “I
don’t know. Sometimes, as a writer, you never knew how big a song will
be till you sing it. Limpopo is for the Limpopo king and it did well for
him.”
He, however, confirmed that he had written a lot of award-winning songs for others artists as well as himself. “I have written and sang a lot of good songs for myself,” he said. “Mandela
has the highest caller tune in Africa. Nobody has beaten that till
today, and Better Pinkin is big; I wrote it for myself.”
The full version of the exclusive interview will be published in the coming days; stay tuned.

The Drake vs. Meek Mill beef will go down
as one of hip-hop’s fiercest in recent times and it all started with a
Twitter rant from Meek.
In the rant, Meek, who is currently dating Drake’s label mate and
friend, Nicki Minaj, accused the YOLO originator of not writing his own
raps.
Meek later alluded to the real reason for his anger towards Drake –
the latter had failed to promote a song both rappers did together.
Drake initially ignored Meek’s rants, allowing his fans to do the
talking for him. Eventually, the Canadian dropped not one but two diss
tracks targeted at Meek. READ ALSO: Everything You Need To Know About The Meek Mill Vs Drake Beef [+ Diss Songs]
Nicki’s boyfriend, who is also the opening act on her current US
tour, responded with his own diss track, Wanna Know, which was viewed as
weak at best by critics.
However, it seems now, Meek is ready to bury the hatchet as he has
reportedly removed the song from music streaming site, Soundcloud.
He also stated that he is no longer interested in beefing Drake or anyone else.
He wrote on Instagram: “We really only focusing on making it out
that’s the only war we fighting…… am not entertaining no rap/real beef

He is, however, relishing the challenge that awaits the team and this
is because of the impressive performance he produced against Manchester
City at the end of January, when the Premier League’s top two sides met
at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea five points clear at the summit.
Four days earlier, Chelsea had beaten Liverpool to progress to the
Capital One Cup final when Zouma shone from the off. It was enough to
earn him only his second start in England’s top-flight for the visit of
their nearest title rivals.
“It is a good memory,” he recalled in a chat with the official
Chelsea website. “And it was an important stage in my development.
“First of all I played the game and I was really proud of that. We
drew 1-1 and we defended well. For my part I think I did well against a
good attack, helping the team to a draw.
“We know we are playing against a good team on Sunday and it will be
difficult, but we have a chance to win. I think it will be a very
interesting game.
“It’s a chance early in the season to show why we are champions. We
want to defend our title. The season after a very good season is always
hard but we have to show we are ready to try and do it.”
Zouma showed his versatility in the 2014/15 season when he lined up
in central midfield for certain games, most notably the League Cup
triumph over Tottenham at Wembley.
He had grown up as a right-sided defender but both in the pre-season
game against Barcelona and the Community Shield he featured on the other
side of the back four.
Cesc Fabregas would also make his 50th appearance for Chelsea if selected for the game.
The Spaniard’s 49 appearances to date have come in the Premier League
(35), the FA Cup (1), the League Cup (4), the Champions League (8) and
the recent Community Shield.

In addition to the Attorney General of the Federation sued as the
third respondent, Falana also sued United Airlines and the Ministry of
Internal Affairs from which he sought compensation for Ajomale in sums
of $100m and N100m respectfully.
Ajomale claimed to have been unlawfully arrested, detained and
deported in handcuffs from US to Nigeria aboard a United Airlines
aircraft in 2010 despite having become a permanent resident in the US in
February 2008 and having no criminal records.
He claimed to have been carrying in his body, since 2010, a tracking
device, in form of a micro chip, allegedly inserted into his body,
through his anus, by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement prior to
his deportation.
He claimed to have been put on board United Airlines aircraft without his travelling papers.
But in a judgment on Thursday, Justice Mohammed Idris struck out the
suit, after holding that there was a major defect in the supporting
affidavit.
Idris said since there was no oral evidence before the court, the
affidavit was the only evidence the court could have relied upon but
noted that there was a major defect in the said affidavit.
“Without a supporting affidavit, this application cannot stand.
“It cannot stand because the affidavit in support constitutes the evidence, since no oral evidence was called.
“Without an affidavit, there is no evidence to support this application and the application has failed.
“It failed and it is hereby struck out,” Idris held.
The judge awarded a cost of N5, 000 against Ajomale after striking out the suit.
Falana had sought a declaration that the alleged unlawful deportation
and inhuman treatment of Ajomale in the US was a violation of is
fundamental rights to dignity of human person and right to mental and
physical health as preserved by sections 35 and 41 of the Nigerian
Constitution and Articles 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and
Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.
He urged the court to hold United Airlines liable for what he termed
his “illegal transportation without his passport and in handcuffs like a
criminal aboard the airline from the US to Nigeria.”
He accused the United Airlines of conniving with or aiding the US
authorities to carry out what he claimed to be his unlawful deportation.
But in opposition to Falana, United Airlines, through its lawyer, Mr.
F.A. Daniel, challenged the territorial jurisdiction of the Nigerian
court to adjudicate over issues which he said transpired in the US.
Daniel submitted that all the inhuman treatment alleged by Ajomale
were not in the knowledge of the airline, saying the airline could not
be held liable.
“There is absolutely no cause of action against the 1st respondent.
“The first respondent was only obeying the law of the land from where
it took off. The idea being touted by the applicant that the 1st
respondent should disobey the US authorities is reprehensible,” Daniel
argued.
“Your Lordship has no power, whatsoever, to adjudicate over this
matter. A Nigerian court cannot question the action of a foreign
country,” Daniel added.
Ajomale alleged that he was wrongfully arrested at BWI Airport in
Baltimore, Maryland in 2009, detained and transported in handcuffs from
the US to Nigeria aboard an aircraft belonging to United Airlines.
He claimed to have been locked up in a cold room for nine hours by a
certain Officer Derrick, in an effort to extract an incriminating
statement from him to the effect that he was an illegal immigrant.
He claimed to have been subsequently arraigned, tried, convicted and
sentenced to six months imprisonment at the DC jail and Rivers
Correction Centre, all in North Carolina before he eventually gained
freedom on August 11, 2009 at 7pm.
He, however, added shortly after his release from prison and cleared
by ICE, he was re-arrested on August 15, 2009 by Derrick, who claimed
that his release was a mistake.
He had therefore been handcuffed and deported to Nigeria aboard United Airlines.
This brings the number of deceased persons to six.
Six people were earlier rescued alive and are receiving treatment in hospitals.
Our correspondent, Kelvin Obeten reports that investigation has begun to ascertain the cause of the accident .
12 people were on board the helicopter which crashed into the lagoon behind the Oworonsoki Police Station.
An eyewitness said the incident occurred at about 3PM on Wednesday, August 12.

made a loud noise before nose-diving into the Oworonsoki end of the
Lagos lagoon.

In July, a major bug was discovered in the software that could let hijackers access data on up to a billion phones.
Manufacturers have been slow to roll out a fix because many variations of Android are widely used.
One Android expert said it was "about time" phone makers issued security fixes more quickly.
Android is the most widely-used mobile operating system
Android has been working to
patch a vulnerability, known as Stagefright, which could let hackers
access a phone's data simply by sending somebody a video message.
"My
guess is that this is the single largest software update the world has
ever seen," said Adrian Ludwig, Android's lead engineer for security, at
hacking conference Black Hat.
LG, Samsung and Google have all said a number of their handsets will get the fix, with further updates every month.
Why the long wait?
Android
is an open source operating system, with the software freely available
for phone manufacturers to modify and use on their handsets.
The
Google-led project does provide security fixes for the software, but
phone manufacturers are responsible for sending the updates to their
devices.
Some phones running old versions of Android are no longer
updated by the manufacturer. Many companies also deploy customised
versions of Android which take time to rebuild with the security
changes.
Apple and BlackBerry can patch security problems more
quickly because they develop both the software and the hardware for
their devices.
BlackBerry's software is reviewed by mobile
networks before being sent to handsets, while Apple can push updates to
its phones whenever it wants.
Some phone-makers add their own software to Android
"The very nature of Android is
that manufacturers add their own software on top, so there have been
delays in software roll-outs," said Jack Parsons, editor of Android
Magazine.
"In the US it's even worse because mobile carriers often
add their own software too, adding another layer of bureaucracy holding
up security fixes.
"There's no real villain here, that's just how
the system works. But there will always be security concerns with
software, so it's right that some of the manufacturers are stepping up
to deal with this now."
Waiting rooms at hospital have been empty for more than a week
Doctors in Ghana have stopped providing emergency services in a strike over their conditions of service.
For more than a week, out patient services at state-run hospitals have been closed because of the dispute.
The government says it has put in place plans for urgent cases, including bringing in private doctors.
The BBC's Sammy Darko in Ghana says hospital managers, who are also doctors, have also been told to deal with emergencies.
Patients currently in hospitals are being treated by doctors but new ones are being turned away, he says. BBC Africa Live: News updates

Doctors have threatened to discharge all patients and resign en masse if the dispute is not resolved by 13 August.
'Greedy' row
Our
correspondent says the battle between doctors and the communication
team for the governing NDC party has been playing out on social media.
Amongst the insults have been salary comparisons - although the doctors are not demanding an increase in their monthly pay.
A senior doctor gets paid about $920 (£593) a month.
The
striking doctors want free post-graduate medical education, better
retirement packages and increases in clothing, fuel and maintenance
allowances.
Other demands include
a request for free overseas healthcare for services not available in
Ghana and the right to import vehicles into the country free of duty.
Benjamin Essuman, a NDC spokesman, called the doctors "greedy" on his Facebook page.
The doctors are demanding better allowances, not a salary increase
Dr Frank Serebour, the general
secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, has said that supporters of
the governing party's stance were being foolish.
Ghana's President
John Mahama said on Wednesday that he would not be pressured to spend
more than had been budgeted for the year.
All Ghanaians can have access free state healthcare if they register with The National Health Insurance Authority.
Government
officials have advised people needing urgent medical attention during
the strike to go to private clinics and show their health insurance
cards.
It is not clear whether those who have done so have received free medical care
CNN)The new English Premier League season begins Saturday -- and with a bang -- when Manchester United hosts Tottenham Hotspur.
Since the money spinning Premier League began in 1992, United has by far been its most successful club, winning 13 titles.
But United and everyone else are currently chasing Chelsea.
Can Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and his men be stopped?
It's one of 11 questions we pose ahead of what will inevitably be another intriguing season.
Can anyone stop Chelsea?
It will be difficult.
With
Mourinho continuing to be at Chelsea's helm, the Blues once again begin
as title favorites. Mourinho has won the league in eight of his past 12

There
may not be a finer strategist in world football, with Mourinho often
employing conservative, successful tactics against the elite -- Chelsea
won three and drew five in all eight league games versus Manchester
City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool last term -- while
brushing aside the lesser ranks.
A
relatively quiet summer in the transfer ranks for cash cow Chelsea still
saw the arrival on loan of striker Radamel Falcao as cover for the
oft-injured Diego Costa while England defender John Stones may join from Everton, giving Chelsea youth in central defense.
But
will the sale of goalkeeper Petr Cech to rival Arsenal come back to
haunt Chelsea and Mourinho given the old adage of "never sell a player
to the competition?"
Don’t laugh, but it took a machete-wielding pitchman and a guy in a bear suit to disrupt the $13 billion dollar shaving industry. In 2012, when Dollar Shave Clubblew up the internet with a viral video employing those zany tactics, the shaving industry bigwigs just scoffed and went back to counting their money. Sure, Dollar Shave Club was offering high-quality razors for the price of a rubber banana, but companies like Gillette and Schick were squatting on over 75% of the men’s razor market, and as a parachute-pantsed wise man once said, can’t touch this.
But Dollar Shave Club founder Michael Dubin saw something the mega razor corps didn’t—an industry ripe for disruption, full of customers who were tired of high prices and getting treated like rubes. Dubin figured out a smarter way: Deliver better value, better service and a better shave through home delivery of high-quality razors.
Three years later, those same bigwigs aren’t scoffing—they’re sweating. Sweating because millions of men (and women) across the US have joined Dollar Shave Club and embraced that smarter way, by voting with their wallets in support of great products, fair prices, and amazing customer service.
The moral of the story: never turn your back on a machete-wielding entrepreneur.

Former Botlon Wanderers skipper and Nigerian star, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, could be on the verge of a shock move to amateur side Wolverton Town after playing for their reserve side last week, the club has confirmed.
Wolverton, who currently ply their trade in the Spartan South Midlands League, were tight-lipped about Okocha's long-term future.
The legendary soccer star was reported to have played 45 minutes for Wolverton’s reserves but is yet to say if he would stay with the club permanently.
According to sbnation.com, Amanda Keech, chairperson of Wolverton Town, said: “He did play 45 minutes last week for us but we can’t say either way whether he will sign yet.
“He is friends with somebody who coaches at the club and could be helping out with pre-season training with the players. We will be able to say more once he has decided.”
